Posted - July 13 2015 : 04:25:36 So, after my last update to Reflect (the latest v5.3.7299 version), I started experiencing failures with my backups that have been running fine for a couple of years. This only occurs on my File/Folder backup, not my disk image backup. The error is "Backup Aborted! - Error reading Image file" and applies to two separate folders on multiple disks written to backup locations on a third disk. I had the error on both folders today (differential), and just ran a verify on the last Diff (to include the full) on both and Reflect said both were good! So, what is it? It is either unreadable or it isn't! When I initially got this error, I thought it might be a disk error, since some files on the backup disk would go missing, then magically reappear. I figured it was the drive, so I replaced it. The same problem reappeared with the new drive. So, since this disk was in a USB 3.0 drive enclosure, I replaced the enclosure with a new one (under warranty), and the problem reappeared. So, I'm now thinking this could be a Reflect issue. I now believe, since I've replaced both the drive and the enclosure, AND verified the backup files that the error indicates it could not read, that Reflect is timing out while the drive spins up (as this drive, even though it is a WD Black drive, spins down after a while no matter what I've tried to do to prevent it from doing so in Win 7). These same drives in the same configurations have worked perfectly without fail for years before the last update. And it only happens to the File/Folder backup. Unfortunately, after the last support email I sent to Macrium, I received a rather rude and blunt email stating that my v5 was no longer supported now that v6 has been released and that I should upgrade to receive support (this after spending days of my time over the last few years troubleshooting issues for these guys on early versions).
So, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced such a problem with V5.3.7299. I'm not really inclined to upgrade to v6 when my v5 appears to be broken after years of perfect service, especially since it appears Macrium has adopted the upgrade-itis approach of so many other SW manufacturers, abandoning users with every new release expecting us to upgrade our entire enterprise. I was a major fan of Macrium until recently, and used to have great faith in their backup integrity, but now, not so much. Not very happy, and no longer recommend the product to my business associates. I've lost confidence in it.

Hi Loopygram,
The error "The Device Is Not Ready" is generic system error code returned by Windows and passed to Reflect, its not a Macrium Reflect error.
It literally is "Device not ready" but usually can be down to a disk not being readable or reachable (you may see some events relating to this in Windows event viewer).
To help isolate the cause, do you have an alternative disk and enclosure that you can attempt a backup?
It may also help to connect the disk directly to the rear of your computer and bypass any USB hubs.
Kind regards

That is the only external drive I have except for some flash drives. Since this is a laptop not sure how else you would attach it except by USB.
Thanks for any help. I'm going to try it again this evening when I get home from work and will let you know how it goes. |

Is an external USB or network device involved in this backup? Does this happen with a scheduled backup or with a manually initiated backup or both?
Yes I've always done my backup on an external Seagate 1T with no problems until now. |

I just acquired a new laptop and when I used Macrium 5 to do a File and Folder backup it aborts shortly into creating the backup and says 'the device isn't ready'. I have no clue what that means. I used this every week on my old laptop with no issues or problems but first time on the new one this happened. I've tried 3 times already and still its a no go.
I did create an image backup successfully earlier today so any help would be appreciated. |

Thanks for posting. Sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with your recent support request.
From your description a 3rd party application could be interfering with Reflect please could you try again after cleanbooting your operating system and let me know the result.
