Has anyone had any luck cloning a failing drive. I've got a drive that will run for about five minutes and then restart. I would like to clone it for my system.

Thanks

Yep, that's what I figured. Thanks

A complete verifiable backup image of the drive as required for full restoration (or 'cloning') purposes is pretty much a go/no-go proposition.

Your main concern, of course, would be to preserve your user files (documents, images, etc.) in whatever way you can possibly do so. If it's your OS drive, the OS and applications can always be re-installed on the replacement drive. In the circumstances, I think I'd be inclined simply to copy the critical user files directly to another drive or removable media.

I don't have a back up unfortunately. The computer is fairly new. I may have to just try and pull file by file. Will macrium pull a partial file and resume once the drive fires up again?

Thanks for your help.

I would assume that you've already tried running CHKDSK /R on the drive. A web search will turn up all kinds of other suggestions for dealing with faulty hard drives (e.g., cooling them down for a while), but it's a doubtful proposition with a drive that has reached that level of instability.

You might possibly have a better chance by creating an image for subsequent drive replacement and restoration rather than drive-to-drive cloning directly. Do you have any previous backup images of that drive?

Regards, Richard
