OK...Replacing a HD without the OS on it went well. Now, I would like to replace the OS HD with a larger HD.I was told that I could do it by cloning the original HD to the larger HD, but that I would have to authenticate the new HD with Microsoft. I haven't done that in so long I forget how to do it. Need some guidance. TY

OK, It worked perfectly. No activation required. I used a cheap external HD enclosure and placed the new HD it it. Then cloned the new HD and swapped it for the old HD. TX JC

Windows Activation may or may not be triggered after you clone your hard drive to a new hard drive. It all depends on how many "points" have been consumed. In any event, if Windows Activation is triggered then all you have to do is simply reactivate Windows using your current license key. I recall that you are "good to go" if you haven't made any other significant hardware changes to your computer during the last 4 months.
So immediately after you clone and possibly have to reactivate your Windows installation, now would be a good time to also install or replace any additional hardware which you want to put into your computer. Examples are new CD/DVD/Blue Ray drives, a different network card, or a new graphics card. Install all of these immediately after you have booted from your cloned hard drive, but before you reactivate Windows since you have a grace period before reactivating Windows. The point to doing this before reactivating is that, if instead you reactivate Windows and then install new hardware, reactivation might be triggered yet again and might require a call to Microsoft to get a new license key since your hardware once again changed within 4 months. |
