Well, I'm only two years younger (73) and I certainly don't consider myself any kind of "geru", but maybe I can help with at least some of your questions and uncertainty about restoring backup images.
First of all, fully restoring any complete backup image of one of your computer's drives will replace everything on that drive with whatever is contained in the backup image. If the drive involved is the one on which your computer's operating system is located, restoration would also replace the operating system along with all of the other files on that drive.
In other words, restoring a complete backup drive image puts everything on that drive back to exactly the way it was at the time when the image was created. There are ways to restore only single partitions or even just single files, but they are largely irrelevant to your actual intention of reverting your computer to its previous (Windows 7) operating system and subsequent handling of any application programs installed under the newer (Windows 8.1) system.
So, to answer directly your question about "the Programs [you] made with win8.1", they certainly will not be included in the fresh Win7 reversion, of course, and you're right in thinking that restoring installed programs selectively from a Win8.1 backup isn't practicable. There are just too many OS registry and other dependencies. You can backup and restore (or just copy over to/from some temporary location) the data files (documents, images, etc.) that you created under Win8.1, but any newly installed application programs would need to be installed again (assuming compatibility) under the Win7 OS.
It's essentially the reverse of the situation discussed in the "Can I transfer my programs and files to a new computer?" article at http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50212.aspx.
Regards, Richard __ P.S.: I hated Win8 too at first and retained Win7 in a dual-boot set-up. But I've actually become more satisfied with the Win8.1 operating system now that it boots to the "normal" desktop with the latest updates. I've even grudgingly accepted switching to the "start screen" for launching stuff that's not already pinned on my task bar, but it is possible to get back the old "start button" menu if that's your main issue. Perhaps you might want to consider persisting with "acclimatization" a little longer. I suspect that Windows 9 isn't going to depart entirely from Mickeysoft's agenda for developing a "one fits all" desktop+mobile operating system if that's what you're hoping. You can do a web search for "leaked" info and videos. |

What is it about Windows 8 that you don't like? If you need a start button, consider Start8, which is only $5. If you hate the "metro" interface, boot into the desktop. Anything specific? I think reinstalling Windows 7 and all your stuff, and then configuring it, probably isn't worth the time, to be honest. |

At the age of 70, I am a relative youngster compared to you two (don't know about Merlin).
No way I'd bother going back to WIndows 7. I'm running Windows 8.1 with the "spring udpate". After my machine boots up I'd defy most people to tell me from a slight distance it is not Windows 7 with the display of icons etc.
I have found no need for the Start button but we don't always work the same. I find the right click on he lower-left Windows icon to bring up everything I need such as Control Panel, Computer Management, ShutDown and a lot more. When I get on my Win7 machine I get annoyed when I right-click the Windows round icon in the corner and don't get the Win8 list of things to access.
I don't don't normally use the Metro interface except for MS-OFfice products and I really like its "Display All Apps" feature when I need it plus the ability to nicely organize the icons into meaningful-to-me groups. With what is available with right-clicking the Windows icon mentioned above I don't really use the Win8 fly-out stuff you get from mousing to the edge and corners of the screens.
The only thing I found I had to do with a couple of programs is to create a Desktop icon for them.
