I have a paid copy of Reflect V5 on my Win 7 desktop. I have a free copy on my Win 7 laptop. Both are 64 bit. All my Reflect backup images are on an external hard drive connected to my desktop, and I create and access those images from my laptop using my SMC network router/switch (wired). That all works just fine.
I just upgraded the free copy on my laptop to V6.0.708, to see what the real differences in the versions are. Ver 6 requires me to make a new PE Rescue Disk, which I did. But the new Rescue disk will not recognize my network!
I found this thread "Can't Browse NAS from Rescue Media" on the V6 forum, which gave me this link: http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/Resolving+network+issues+in+Windows+PE
Unfortunately, I am not allowed to post on the V6 forum, since I don't yet have a paid copy of V6, which seems strange, so I am posting here.
I followed the steps in the link, although the terminology was not all clear to me. I assume that the NAS they talk about is indeed my network router/switch?
With Windows PE open, I went to Other tasks->Network config, and found that my router/switch IP address was listed under 'Use the following IP address', and if fact when I attempted to obtain it automatically, it came up with the same address. So i forced that screen to use my IP address, and said OK. But the PE Rescue Disk still would not recognize my network.
Then I went to the Map Network Share screen. I selected Z: drive, and entered the long folder string to the files on my desktop. I then got a screen asking for the user name and password for my router/switch. I do not have to use this info to access from my computer, but I put it in anyway. Then I had success. All the images appeared on the Windows PE Image Restore screen.
So I exited the Rescue disk and shut down my computer. Then I rebooted with the Rescue Disk again in my CD drive. Guess what...the Z: drive does NOT appear, and again my Network is not recognized.
What the heck is going on here, and how do I fix it? Reflex ain't much good to me on the laptop if I can't get the Rescue disk to work.
Not a good night.

Drive letters are assigned by the OS so you may not see the same drive letters when booting to the rescue media as when you boot with your normal OS. How are you entering the network address? Are you using an IP or network name, or what? Again, the IP may not be the same if it is not static.

Drac144:
I am entering the IP of my router/switch. It is static, and does not change.
I just repeated the whole process that I did yesterday.
With the Macrium PE Rescue Screen open, I went to Other tasks->Network config, and again found that my router/switch IP address was listed under 'Use the following IP address', and in fact when I attempted to obtain it automatically, it came up with the same address. So I forced that screen to use my IP address, and said OK. But PE Rescue still would not recognize my network.
Then I started PE Explorer and went to the Map Network Share screen. I selected Z: drive, and entered the long folder string to the files on my desktop. I then got a screen asking for the user name and password for my router/switch, which I entered. Then I again had success. All the images appeared on the PE Image Restore screen. However, NO extra drive letters show up. What does appear is the entry/drive 'Image(\\path to my files on the desktop computer)'. Clicking that brings up the list of my backup image files.
So again I exited the Rescue disk and shut down my computer. Then I rebooted with the Rescue Disk again in my CD drive. As before, no new drive letters (Z:, etc.) appear, the Image entry/drive no longer appears, and again clicking the Network entry does nothing.
Hope this helps.

I have done some more testing, which has led to more questions.
Let me provide my setup in a little more detail. I have Reflex 6 (free) installed on my Laptop (Win 7). I have an external hard drive (JPassport) connected via USB 2.0 to my desktop (Win XP). The computers are linked via my LAN, which is a SMC router/switch (Ethernet). My Reflex backup image files are stored on the JPassport external hard drive.
I have not been able to determine how to attach a file to these messages, so the following is all text.
1. When I first boot from the Rescue Media (Windows PE 3.1), I get the following error message: "Opening directory: \\VIRTUALPC1\JPassport\BackUp\ThinkpadE430_7\Macrium\Image: Access is denied."
This is the correct file location, but I have no idea why the access is denied. When I previously used the 'Map Network Share' feature of PE Explorer, where it asked for my router password, I checked the box that said to save it.
Any idea why I am getting this error message? I do not use login passwords on my computers when I boot them.
2. When I go to Other Tasks->Network Config on the Rescue Media screen, it asks for IP address, and also Prefered DNS server address. The DNS server address listed is the IP address of my router/switch. But the IP address listed under 'Use the following IP address' does not exist on my LAN, when I check all the IP addresses on my router. When I choose 'Obtain an IP address automatically', the IP address it finds is also not on my LAN.
There is only one entry on the top (controller) line on this screen, and it is the Ethernet network adapter on my laptop, so that should be correct.
So what IP address is supposed to go on the IP address line?
Does any of this give you a better idea as to what my problem might be?

You provided a lot of information. And while that is usually helpful, it may be causing confusion (at least on my side). Let's start with your router/switch. That should not be part of this discussion. It is a tool. It is NOT your network. It is a tool that facilitates connecting multiple devices together. So maybe your terminology is just skewed. \\virtualpc1 is one way to address a physical computer. One could also use an IP address (192.168.100.10 for EXAMPLE). Your router may assign IP addresses but it also has an IP address (so you can configure it) but its IP address should not be part of this discussion.
As to why you cannot access that folder. First, I am not sure why that folder is being accessed at boot time. So let's ignore it for now.
You say you are using PE 3.1. That is probably OK for your system, but PE 5 is newer and has more features. I do not know if using this newer version would help with your network access but if it is not too difficult, you may want to try creating a new rescue media based on PE 5. See if anything changes.
Another question comes to mind. Rescue media is normally used to restore image data to a new or corrupted hard drive. It sounds like you are using the rescue media INSTEAD of the normal version of Reflect. Could you please explain why you are booting into the rescue media and looking for network access?

When I just repeated the process, I no longer get the error message about accessing that folder.

Thanks for the clarification. I just tried entering the IP address of my XP desktop (the computer JPassport is attached to), but still no luck.

I just created the Rescue media disk because I upgraded to Ver. 6, and I wanted to make sure it was working correctly in case my hard drive becomes corrupted. That is the only reason.
>>You say you are using PE 3.1. That is probably OK for your system, but PE 5 is newer and has more features. I used PE 3.1 because that is what the Reflex screen recommended for Win 7 when I created the Rescue media disk.
I created a new Rescue Media using PE 5. It does not make any improvement. What is strange is if I select 'Folders to search' on the 'Image Restore' screen, the search list already includes under Recent backup destination \\VIRTUALPC1\JPassport\BackUp\ThinkpadE430_7\Macrium\Image\. I then tried to add it again, but when I click 'add to list', it says the folder does not exist!
I have no idea where to go from here.

Hi Harry,
Normally your computer would receive an available IP address from your router, this will be one within the range of your network but not in use by another device.
Please try mapping a drive again.
If you are using network storage please try using the IP address of your storage instead of the network name. Please make sure your storage is switched on and connected to the network.
You can also use an IP address instead of a name when searching for folders.
Kind regards

Stephen:
Is there some way I can attach images to these text messages? Sometimes it is not clear exactly what you are asking, and even when I know, it is sometimes hard to describe my reply in text. I have been taking photos of the screen as I Step through this, and they may be of help.

Hi Harry,
You an use the tags [ img][/ img] (without the extra space) to insert image URLs. You can upload an image to a website such as http://postimg.org/ and paste the link provided between the tags.

Stephen:
I have attached an image file, Macrium_PEproblem1.jpg.
Hopefully it will come through. If not, here is the link: http://postimg.org/image/7l8pas4xp/
This file is a panorama for 15 screenshots stacked vertically. Except for the 1st one (Harry’s Network), all the rest have large blue or green circles in the upper right hand corner with numbers or letters. I will refer to those numbers or letters in this description. Except for ‘Harry’s Network’, all the rest of the screenshots were taken in the order displayed this morning.
The ‘Harry’s Network’ schematic shows how my computers are linked. The Windows 7 laptop is connected via the network to my Windows XP desktop, and a Passport external hard drive (J:), is attached by USB 2.0 to the Windows XP desktop. The Windows XP computer also uses Reflect and its image files are also on the same J: drive, but this connection is direct; not via the network. The XP Rescue disk is able to recognize these files just fine.
1. When my Win 7 laptop is booted via Windows, I have circled the three internal drives on the laptop (C:, D:, and Q:). Below that you will see the three computers attached to my network. ThinkpadE430 is the Windows 7 laptop, VirtualPC1 is my XP desktop, and Win7Virtual-PC is my Win 7 desktop.
2. When I open Reflect 6 on my Win 7 laptop, and select Restore, you can see that Reflect can find the backed up images on JPassport (the external hard drive attached to my XP Desktop). So I can perform a normal restore with no issues.
A. This screen is from my SMC router/switch. I have underlined the IP address of my LAN. I have also underlined the IP addresses of my LAN Computers. Note that ThinkpadE430 (the Win 7 laptop) has two addresses, and virtualpc1 (XP desktop) has one.
3. This is the 1st screen I see when I boot the Win 7 laptop from the Rescue media CD. {Sorry for the poor quality pictures—these were taken with a camera.} No files are shown, and pressing ‘Refresh’ does nothing.
4. This is the screen when I browse from an image file. You see that Boot(X:) has been added, along with the CD drive. Clicking on ‘Network’ does nothing.
5. Here is the screen when I select the ‘Other Tasks’ tab, and select Network config. The IP address selected is on my Win 7 laptop, and the DNS server address is the IP of my LAN network.
B. This is an updated screenshot from my SMC router. The name of 192.168.2.191 has been changed from ThinkpadE430. I don’t know why.
6. I tried to ‘Renew’ obtaining the IP address automatically, but nothing changed. Last week I tried manually setting the IP address to 192.168.2.2, which is the IP for my XP desktop. Still did not find the files.
7. This screen is when I activated PE Explorer. Again, nothing on my network is shown.
8. Here I mapped the network drive manually. I have underlined the path to the Reflect Image files on JPassport.
9. I had to then enter my Network user name and password, which I did here.
10. This is the same screen as #7, except now the Image folder has been located, and is shown under Network Drives.
11. Closing PE Explorer takes me back to screenshot #3, Restore, except now when I hit Refresh, all of the image backup files are shown.
12. Clicking Browse for an image file now shows an ‘Image’ entry under ‘Computer’, and the path is shown in parenthesis.
So that gets me to the correct location on the J: drive attached to the Windows XP desktop.
When I exit the Rescue screen, Windows boots normally. But if I try to then reboot from the Rescue disk, nothing appears to have been saved, and I have to repeat the complete process again.
So how do I get the Rescue disk to automatically find the image file on JPassport without manually going all the way through screenshot #11?

Hi Harry,
From reading your post I can see that you have managed to access your images from within the rescue media.
The IP address you are receiving looks OK. Its normal for your router to assign an unused IP address.
Any changes in rescue media settings such as mapping drives will not persist when rebooted this is normal behavior.
Kind regards

Thanks for your reply and patience.
But if I am not doing anything wrong, and the IP address appears fine, why is Reflect not automatically recognizing the J: drive on my XP?
I'm glad I can get there manually by mapping the network drive, but it just seems Reflect should do this for me.

Hi Harry,
This behavior is normal. The rescue media will not retain drives mapped in Windows.
Each time you boot into the rescue media you will have to map your network drives.
Kind regards

Stephen:
Thanks for all your help on this. I now understand.
But you may want to have someone look at an article on your Knowledge Base titled "Resolving Network issues in Windows PE." It seems to indicated that what I have to do is the exception rather than the rule. For example, the 1st sentence of the article says: "In the windows PE rescue environment, you MAY find that you can't connect to your network......"
Thanks again.
