Can anyone provide an overview of the recommended procedure for transferring a new Win 8.1 system ASUS N550Jk from a larger 1TB spin disk to a smaller Samsung SSD 250 using the current verson of Macrium REflect Professional?
Both disks are GPT type. The SSD will be the only final disk installed.
I am new with Macrium but very familiar with the procedures if the software were Acronis TrueImage Home.
Of course, the very first step will be a full and complete backup using Macrium WinPE CD.
My initial plans are to install the SSD inside the comptuer and restore a backup when booted from Win PE 4.1 Recovery CD. At this point, Macrium is not installed but could if an alternate procedure is recommended. Have multiple licenses.
For practice, I have reviewed the clone video and performed a backup and restore as well as a couple clones.
An alternate Laptop also exists with 2 external USB docking units for source and target, if it is recommended that the process can be done with the source and target.
Specific steps not needed but would appreciate an overview as to the preferred method when using Macrium. I am aware of the risks associated with cloning but recovery backups would exist for safety. |

Grover... Have you finally jumped ship and left Acronis behind or are you just testing the Macrium waters? I was a previous Acronis user and followed your posts for quite some time. I couldn't be happier with Macrium and their support. |

Hi Grover, nice to see your presence here. I second the comment on the great Macrium support team who also have a strong presence on this forum.
I'd just take the image of the spin drive and restore the partitions being sure to get the UEFI and System Reserved as well as the C partition so the SSD drive will boot. Of course, the usual "in-use space" must fit on the 250GB SSD. Reflect is SSD aware so boundary issues are not a problem. |

Thanks all of you for the warm welcome! Too soon to say I jumped ship but I did buy 4 licenses which I plan on using.
I needed to replicate a GPT disk with 6 partitions WITHOUT a change of partition sequence and I am hopeful that this software will be able to do that. It will be a few days before I will get this chance. Grover |

One thing that was a little odd for me to figure out when I moved from ATI was that if you're resizing partitions to fit on a smaller hard drive you must use the "drag and drop" method to do this. You'll see "Drag partitions to the destination disk or click 'Copy selected partitions' and click 'Next'" at the top of the appropriate restore window. Select the source and target disks, delete the existing partition on the destination disk if necessary, then drag the partitions from source to destination and resize them by clicking on the "Restored Partition Properties" link toward the bottom of the window.
I would also do as you suggest and create an image then restore from the image as opposed to going through a clone process where both drives have to be physically installed at the same time. That's just easier for me. Also, Reflect will "clone" the hard drive ID from the old to the new drive if the restoration is performed thusly. I've always used the full program for all my imaging and restores with Reflect and have had no problems. (Except in the case where I am restoring a system partition of course.)
So cool to see you in the Macrium forums! It brings back memories of some of the discussions we've had "over there" and so many posts of yours I've read. I still visit their forum from time to time and, in fact, was just reading posts of yours the other day wherein you were trying to help people. |

Thank you Gork. I'm 83 next month but I still try to help on the other forum as there are so many instances where my help can be beneficial. I have been one of those which operated from the "KISS" principle and would like fewer features and a program that works. Many issues are self-inflicted.
As for Macrium, so far, I have been very pleased with the feel of the program.
I have already performed several restores and clones--just for practice. I am trying to get comfortble with the feel for the program before I "go for broke." The training video's have beeb very helpful.
Thanks for the help. Grover |

Update! Used Macrium Pro to backup and then restore a Win 8.1 GPT disk. Backup was from a spin disk to a Samsung 250GB SSD. Restore was successful (as you knew it would be) and computer booted on first boot. Target disk was inside the Laptop for the restore. Restore was via the WinPE 5 Recovery CD. Both my Grandson and I were very very pleased.
Question: The WinPE has an option (upper left corner--from memory), which offers something like "Fix Windows boot problems". Where does this fit with the Windows Recovery CD "Startup repair"? |

Very glad to hear you're getting to grips with the software and finding it to your liking . quote: Question: The WinPE has an option (upper left corner--from memory), which offers something like "Fix Windows boot problems". Where does this fit with the Windows Recovery CD "Startup repair"?
The Fix Windows Boot Problems option in Reflect incorporates the functionality from the Windows Recovery CD but also provides extra options that can be chosen depending on your issues/requirements. For more detailed information please see the following KB article: http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50168.aspx.
Kind Regards, Scott - Macrium Support |
