I searched but couldnt find this in the KB nor these forums.
I currently have my usb stick with my technicians macrium reflect WinPE on it, and the macrium portable application.
But when working on a PC, i have to stick in 2 USB's : the macrium usb stick and an external hard drive to store the image.
So, i was wondering, i have a 2TB USB 3.0 external drive. Can i put the macrium WinPE environment on there and the macrium portable AND store my images on there too?
My stick is formatted FAT32. I would really want NFTS tho. I use 4GB file size anyway, but still.
I think i remember that the macrium WinPE build re-formats the entire disk. Or was that just the one partition it's going into.
Even if that's true, i could write the WinPE then create my own folders for storing images afterwards.
Altho if i have to update WinPE will it re-format?

Hi,
Thanks for posting.
It is possible to use an HDD to store both WinPE boot files and image files.
Please follow these steps: 1. Clean down existing partitions from the HDD.
2. Create s primary active FAT32 partition, 1GB should suffice for size. Use either Disk Management Console or diskpart from an elevated command prompt to achieve this. This partition must be formatted prior to running the Rescue Media Wizard. This partition will store your WinPE files.
3. Create a second partition, this can be NTFS and span the remainder of the disk. This partition will store your image files.
4. Run the Rescue Media Wizard and on the final page check 'USB Device' and select the external HDD from the drop down list.
5. Check the 'Create multi boot' option.
6. Check the 'Create a Technicians USB Drive' option.
7. Click Finish, this should copy the WinPE files to the FAT32 option.
Please ensure you have a FAT32 partition as the first partition and that you check the options in Step 5 and 6. This will force the Rescue Media Wizard to copy files to the FAT32 partition.
Target partitions will not be formatted by the Rescue Media Wizard.
Updating the WinPE media will not format partitions but will copy the new WinPE files to the FAT32 partition.
I have successfully tested Technicians Portable launcher along with UEFI and MBR booting from the same HDD.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards. Chris - Macrium Support |

I dont need to boot in the 2nd partition--the one that's NOT the macrium reflect WinPE parition.
I assume if i'm just using it for data, it's the same procedure? Or does step 5 change? (i haven't run it yet--the answer may be obvious when i do.)

Ok this worked perfectly. Thanks.
FYI, for others who might be reading this, i used the free software MiniTool Partition Wizard v9.0 (see my post about it here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-partition-management-software.htm#comment-121618) to modify my existing partitions. I already had 1 partition using up the whole 2TB on this external drive. I shrunk this existing partition, which had MR images on it already, and moved it to the back end of the drive. Then i created the new FAT32 partition before the old one. I used 2GB for the partition size cuz i noticed that the WinPE recovery environment went up from 400MB to 700MB since last time i made one, so in case it grows again, i'll have space without having to resize partitions again.
In my case, MiniTool Partition Wizard formatted this 2GB partition automatically.
Then i went thru the basic procedure in Macrium Reflect. I clicked on "Create rescue media".
I selected USB Device as you suggested. I think i see why you said that the FAT32 partition for MR recovery WinPE has to be first--cuz MR only listed as an option the first partition on that drive.
I checked "Enable multiboot MBR/UEFI USB support" as you suggested. I suspect that this is the wayo to tell MR not to erase the whole drive. yes? Cuz i do not need to boot from the 2nd partition--just store images there. But, i can verify, this worked and my 2nd partition was intact after the WinPE was built in the first partition.
I also checked "Create technician's USB Drive with portable application support". (I have paid for the technician's license so that's why i get this option--it doesnt show up normally, in case others are reading this.)
I tested and i was able to use the portable application just fine. I was able to capture an image and save it to the 2nd partition on this same drive.
And i was able to boot to the recovery partition WinPE and run Reflect. I restored an image that was stored in the 2nd partition on this same drive in this environment.
And i also in this process upgraded to v6. It works nice. I like it.
