Can I run other programs such as Word while a backup is running? My backup takes almost 24 hours.

Yes. As long as you have VSS (a Windows system) then it allows you to use other programs without messing up your backup in progress.

How do I know if I have VSS ? I am running W8.1

It runs by default and has been in Windows since XP. Windows System Restore and other programs use it.
