full backup fails because of not enough space on 1TB disk.
'purge set up to before backup' in disk management, but 'purge will be run after the image' appears on scheduled backup screen.
How can I change this?

The DSM purge can be set to run EITHER before the backup is run OR after the backup completes.

NOTE that there are TWO places this can be changed. It can be changed in your defaults AND it can be changed in EACH of your backup definition (XML) files. If you change the default, an XML file CREATED after the change will have the default values. HOWEVER, any XML files already existing will NOT be changed if the default DSM is changed. So be sure you change the DSM in your existing XML files if you want them to have that operation. The DSM is in the Advanced section of the XML file.

Thanks for the help.

After a successful backup, I'm left with log that contains twenty or so incremental (presumably) files, some of which date from 2014.
Can I safely delete these?

Yes, you can delete any log entries you do not need.
