I want to restore my data to a fresh Windows reinstall from a file and folder backup.
However, when I reinstall, I tend to change my folder structure somewhat, plus a number of files and folders don't need to be restored (indeed, are better left unrestored).
I understand there's an option to restore to a different location, but it seems that whatever location you chose, and whatever files and folders you chose not to restore, you still get a duplicate of the whole (empty) folder structure above the top element(s) you've chosen to restore.
Although not always. Sometimes, some intermediate folders get shunted for no obvious reason.
Is there a way to avoid that ? Does v.6 correct this problem ?

Related question : does Macrium verify the integrity of the files it thus restores ? There's no option for this in the wizard, and the restore log does not mention any verification.

The easiest solution is for you to mount the backup file in Windows Explorer and use copy and paste for the files/folders you want to recover.

Yes, the data read from the .mrbak file is hash checked as it is restored. However, this doesn't happen when using Windows Explorer. You can independently verify a backup by clicking the 'Restore' tab, selecting the file and clicking 'Verify'

Thanks, Nick. It's nice to know restored file backups are silently verified by Macrium.
But mounting them in order to copy/paste through Windows Explorer is out of the question for me, except for small transfers, because as you said Windows does not verify, and furthermore its copy/paste function is horribly unreliable beyond a certain number or size of files.
In fact, I tried to overcome this through TeraCopy, but as I said in this thread : http://support.macrium.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14605 , I have some (freshly Macrium-verified) mounted images that wouldn't let themselves be copied, either through TeraCopy or RichCopy.
Which is the reason why, as I was advised in that thread, I restored my image on a separate partition, then backed it up again in files and folder format, then tried to restore it -- and here I am.
The fact that my copy attempts fail both with TeraCopy and RichCopy makes me think maybe I'm doing something wrong in Macrium. |
