I would like to make an image of my machine and restore it onto a computer which has entirely different hardware (i.e disks, graphics cards, sound cards, etc...)

Yes you can do what you wish for legitimate upgrade replacement purposes for Windows 7, Vista and XP operating systems only. You will need to use purchased versions of Macrium Reflect plus (if motherboard has changed) Macrium Reflect Additions and install both on your PC.
First create an Image of your operating system, programs and data including your Active partition and including all partitions on your machine (assuming you are transferring the whole machine). The Image is best saved onto an external hard drive such as USB.
Make sure your version of Macrium Reflect is up to date: with PC connected to the internet in the 'Help' menu of Reflect select 'Check for updates', download and run any updates.
Next create a Windows PE rescue CD.
Now boot your replacement PC with Windows PE rescue CD (don't forget to set your replacement PC to boot from CD/DVD first in BIOS). Now restore the Image to your replacement PC using Windows PE. Then while Windows PE is still in the replacement computer (and before rebooting) use ReDeploy to set the restored Image to the new hardware.
The Macrium Reflect licenses only allows the above if the old PC is no longer used in any way because it is replaced by the new PC.
If you propose to duplicate the software so you have two working computers you will need appropriate licenses for the software in the Image so it can all be used on two PCs instead of one and in addition you will need a Deployment license for Macrium Reflect.

Disk restore restores all partitions to the same size as in the original Image in one operation. If you want larger partitions than originally then you will need to restore one partition at a time.

If you have windows 7, your should be able to swap hardware without issue. Cipset drivers could be the only issue - uninstall if possible. With XP, also works...definitely need to uninstall 3rd party drivers, has a few 'brown trousers' moments during first few bootups and all will be well.
I have swapped hardware more times than I care to say and never had a problem or had to do much pre-planning.
I bought additions and redeploy MAINLY to support Macrium. Nice to have if I would ever need them, but doubt it.

I currently have no need to restore, but I am interested in your experience of restoring W7 to new hardware.
You say that one should uninstall the chipset drivers ... presumably that is from the old PC, before creating the image, then restoring to the new PC .... and presumably W7 will find a suitable driver to get going. Is that so ?
However, if I don't know my PC (motherboard) is about to die then I will be stuck with an image with the chipset drivers on it.
Have you been in this position ? And how did it work out ??
Can I escape without Redeploy, do you think ?

Hi,
Thanks for posting.
Its highly unlikely that you will be able to use your existing OS on new hardware without using some kind of OS deployment software (Redeploy)
Redeploy comes with both the Professional and Server versions.
