Using V4.2, build 3141

A few suggestions:

File Backup, Differential

When setting up an initial differential backup, it requires you to append to an existing image. Thus, you must first create a new image, then go back and redo the differential setup.

Would you please consider an option to first make a full backup when setting up the differential backup?

As these differential backups will grow in size (as well as the incrementals in number) it would be helpful to have options to redo the full backups, every week(s), month, year, etc. And then purge older backups at user-defined intervals.

The Image ID's are very cryptic. Would you please consider masks that can be used to create more user friendly ID's. For example, current date, user name, machine type, user data (like TA DELL), etc.

In the options, RESTORE - DRIVE LETTER - The last sentence is not complete.

Thank you!

YOU CAN AUTO PURGE OLD BACKUPS AND BEGIN A NEW SERIES OF FULL, DIFFERENTIAL, OR INCREMENTAL BACKUPS:

In 'Other Tasks' menu, click on 'Defaults' to open Defaults window. Select 'Disk Space Management', Enable disk space management, and set your schedule.

THIS SCHEDULE WILL APPLY TO ALL SCHEDULED BACKUPS.

If you want different deletion schedules (or no deletion) for different backup jobs, here is a long explanation on how to do that for differential or incremental backups:

Create a FULL backup (Create Backup Wizard). When you get to the page titled 'Complete', click on the 'Advanced' button on the lower left corner.

In the Advanced Settings window, click on Disk Space Management, and set your purge schedule. Close the window.

When you click 'Finish', a Backup Save Options window opens. Check both boxes 'Run this backup now' and 'Save this backup as an XML Backup Definition File'. Name the XML file, close the window, and let the backup run.

Next, click on the 'XML Definition Files' tab, select your Full backup file, and schedule when you want it to run.

Now, create a differential or incremental backup. At the 'Append to image' window, YOU MUST SELECT 'Append to the most recent image'.

At the bottom of that window, select the folder path to your Full backup, then click Next.

At the 'Complete' window, you again have the 'Advanced' option to select Disk Space Management'. BECAUSE YOU SCHEDULED DISK SPACE MANAGEMENT IN THE FULL BACKUP SCHEDULE, DO NOT USE IT HERE. (You can use it in either backup, but both isn't necessary.)

Click Finish, Save as XML Backup Definition File, Name the XML file. I suggest you check 'Run this backup now' to verify that the backup is properly setup, close the window, and let the backup run.

Next, click on the XML Definition Files tab, and schedule when you want your differential or incremental backup to run.

Done. Your Full backups, and linked Differential and Incremental backups, will be deleted on a schedule. You can use this same process on File and Folder backups.

NAMING IMAGE FILE: It is not recommended, but you can name Full backups instead of using the image ID number. At the 'Backup destination' screen, uncheck 'Use the image ID as the file name' box, and fill in the name you want.

I still use the image ID as the file name. I use Folder names and Comments to describe my backups. I agree, image IDs are confusing, but I'm too paranoid to not use the default setting.

I know this isn't the forum for tutorials, but I did want to help you with two of your concerns. My apologies to everyone else.

Generally, your comments express my feelings. It takes too much tinkering and experimentation to properly use MR. I'm not a geek, and I do not want to write script. The geeks can do a lot with this software, which is great, but I need buttons and menu options.

The good news is, once I manage to set it up like I want, It runs perfectly.

Thank you for your thorough reply, Richard!

I would like to be able to reset the differential backups, without having to resort to auto-purging.

Image ID's - Using folder names to keep visually organized is an excellent idea. However, how do you use the XML files to repeat backups if each image goes to a unique folder?
