So - I think I've seen something on the forum about this, but it seems both differential and incremental backups REQUIRE a full backup to exist before executing successfully. In fact it seems that it requires a particular backup ID to exist.
Full backups can't be scheduled to run incrementals nor vice versa, so do I understand correctly that I need to create two XML files, one for a full backup and another for an incremental? Then when I've created them, if the full uses the disk management feature to remove old backups, the scheduled incremental will eventuall fail when it's specified full backup ID will have been deleted.

Not quite correct. A full backup is required but an incremental/differential doesn't require a specific image id. It will increment the most recent image set in the target folder. When the DSM purge runs entire image sets (full + inc/diffs) will be deleted, not including the current set.
