I'm having a problem with one of my servers backing up. Basically, it takes far too long. I've tried re-running it again this morning and after 4 hours it's still analysing the disks (they've only got about 30gb in use on each of the 3 disks)
Thanks for your post. Sorry you are having problems.
This sounds like a file system problem. Can you run 'chkdsk x: /r /f' on the drive that's causing the problem. (replace x: with the correct drive letter)
Also, if you are running Server 2008, check that Reflect isn't set for XP compatibility mode. It should run native.
I haven't been able to run chkdsk yet as I have been unsure which disk is the problem. I've separated the backups out into C drive only and E drive only. The E drive doesn't get past analysing but I have managed to back-up the C drive but it took 1hr 15 mins for just 20gb.
I'm running windows web server 2008. I've copied (eventually) all data from my affected E drive to a new G drive. A full backup of C and G drives was working fine until (presumably) the problem file was copied and now Macrium cannot analyse the G drive either.
I've tried running chkdsk g: /r and found no problems on this drive. Is there anyway to get Macrium skip what I suspect is a problem file?
Thanks for getting back. Sorry you are still having problems with this.
To establish whether another process is preventing your file system from being read can you boot into the Windows PE rescue environment and attempt to create an image from there?
Could be a bit tricky as this is a web server in constant use (hence the need to copy E to G rather than run chkdsk on E). I'll try asking my boss if there is no other option.
I have now had a chance to re-boot the server but this has not helped. The backup freezes while analysing files at exactly the same point on F or G drive (which are copies of each other)
Thanks for posting back, sorry we haven't found a solution for you yet.
Please could you modify the global Defaults to not Verify the File System before backup. 1. Select Edit Defaults from the main toolbar button. 2. Click the Backup category. 3. Click Verify File System (on the left hand list). 4. Select Backup without verifying the file system. 5. Click Ok to save the defaults and dismiss the dialog.
Please try the backup again, it may fail but at least we will then have some logs to work off.
Very strange result here - without Macrium verifying the file system the backup was successful. Is it a problem to leave out the initial verify permanently?
The file system verification checks that the file system clusters are marked as 'in use' by the NTFS Bitmap. It's rare for this to be an issue and if 'chkdsk' was OK then you won't have a problem.
