I've discovered a very weird, very specific issue involing Reflect 4 images, using Reflect 5 to restore them, Firefox, and ZoneAlarm 10. If you use Reflect 5 to restore a Reflect 4 image that has Firefox and ZoneAlarm 10 on it, Firefox will no longer open at all. Firefox32.exe goes into memory, but never opens Firefox. Firefox32.exe also cannot be cancelled from memory, it remains in place even after attempts to use Task Manager to close it off. This issue does not happen if you have ZoneAlarm 9 installed. The version number of Firefox does not matter. It also does not happen if you use Reflect 5 to restore a Reflect 5 made image. It only seems to happen if you created an image in Reflect 4 and use Reflect 5 to restore it. I only happened to accidentally come across it after recently upgrading from Reflect 4 to Reflect 5.
I've absolutely no idea how this issue can be troubleshot. It requires so many different applications, using them in specific ways, etc. I'm mostly posting this in case anyone else happens to come across this issue. I would post this over on the ZoneAlarm forums but tech support is not available for the free version and tech support does not monitor issues posted on their support forums. Those forums are mostly for moderators and users to report problems and how they managed to resolve them, if they did. |

Hi
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It does appear to be related to ZoneAlarm and seems a very unusual situation. If we can find a cause we'll let you know.
Kind Regards

The problem goes way deeper into ZoneAlarm 10 than I realized. My solution works ONCE. The next time you try to update Firefox, the problem returns with FF not opening and getting stuck in memory. I've played around with ZA 10 for months now and I've decided it's just not worth trying to tinker anymore with it. I'll wait for the next free version, e.g. ZA 11, and see if they get their act together with that release. I only just happened to luck out that FF 10.0.1 was just released. I only had to go back to Friday to restore down a non-ZA 10/ZA 9 system. Had it been weeks, I'd have to restored back that number of weeks. |

Could the cause be NOT a disparity between Macrium Version V4 and V5, BUT the AGE of the image being restored ?
Perhaps the commercial licensed version of ZoneAlarm includes some consequences should their servers decide a non-legitimate user is connected, and maybe your free version has the revenue protection disabled, but either it or their servers get confused when you get back on the Internet with an earlier version of the computer than they last saw you using.

I don't think it's related to free and paid versions. I also tried it with Internet Security Suite 30 day free trial and it does the same thing. Usually, when there's a software bug, paying for a paid version won't cure it.
I've tested ZA 10 for a few months of revisions now and they all have this problem with Firefox. I thought that maybe trying to restore a Reflect 5 image with Reflect 5 recovery environment might fix the problem and it did appear to. Until Firefox is updated, then, the same problem occurs with FF not opening and not leaving memory once it enters it.
Of course, it could just be on my particular system. Dell XPS 8300 PC where ZA 9 was previously installed. Upgrading could be the problem, but, I also tried uninstalling ZA 9 with Revo Uninstaller and then installing ZA 10. However, ZA 9 could have left behind some residue that prevents ZA 10 from installing properly, no matter what you do. I've encountered problems with software like that before, so, it could be a variety of issues. But, I'm not going to test it too much anymore. |

I think, though, I've found a workaround. First, copy the folder found at C:\Users\<Account Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles to an alternate location. Next, uninstall Firefox with the option to delete the user profile data. Then, delete the profile folder you just copied from C:\Users\<Account Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. Then, install FF and test that it runs. Then, restore the folder you copied from C:\Users\<Account Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles to C:\Users\<Account Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and choose to replace all files and folders contents. Lastly, test that FF still runs, and, it should. |

I KNEW this work around would fail at the next update of Firefox! The simple answer is don't use ZoneAlarm 10! |
