Hi
I regularly backup my computer using reflect. I find that I am getting a long list of incremental backups following my initial full backup. My backups are stored on a separate hard drive to the OS.
I want to be selective about which backups I can restore to (retrospectively) and then delete the unnecessary incremental files. Say I wanted to create one full backup retrospectively, would the following process work? :
* Create a full backup of my current system
* Restore to a previous incremental backup of interest
* Create a full backup of my system at that point in time
* Restore to the backup of my current system
* Delete incremental backup files that refer to before and after the retrospective full backup image created above.
I would be left with the three full backups - the old full backup, the one created based on my current OS and one retrospective image which is based on a point in time between the two (It would have to be properly labelled so that I don't look at the created date and think it's a newer version of the OS than it is).
Is this a good idea, is there a better way to do this currently with Macrium Reflect? |

Hi Sassora,
This strategy is absolutely fine - you will be left with the three full backups as you expect. There isn't currently a more efficient way to achieve this than what you have suggested.
Please note that the incrementals are all referencing the last full backup, so this full backup will need to be kept around for the incrementals to work.

Why not create an Incremental backup.
This should be much smaller than a Full backup.
Then you can remove all incremental backups.
After this you can start a new series of Incremental which are based on the FULL backup + the Differential.

I have plenty of disk space to store a few full backups. I feel a little uneasy about relying on incremental and differential backups. The more component parts, the more chance that things will go wrong, for example I might delete a single incremental file by accident or for some reason one of the files gets corrupted. Given I have space, if I want a restore image then I think it's best to do a full backup. I may even delete my oldest one and leave myself with two.

It would be great if Macrium could be configured to make no more than [n] number of incrementals/differentials before making a new full backup. To the best of my knowledge no backup software can do this.
