I'm trying to get the Windows PE environment to work properly on my Dell R210 rackserver.
With default settings of the rescue disc, I can neither see my hard drive(s) nor my NIC(s).
The system is equiped with a PERC S100 Raid controller and Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet cards ( there are 2 of them ).
I've downloaded the 32bit Vista drivers for both, placed the drivers in the boot directories -disk and network- as described but with no success.
Has anyone succeeded with this setup? Am I missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Merlin,
Thx for your fast reply. The results:
10:44:46 - Macrium ReflectDC - Driver Copy Utility 1.2 - Copyright 2010, 2011 (c) 10:44:46 - WinPE component is x86 10:44:46 - IsWow64Process executed successfully from kernel32.dll 10:44:46 - Operating system is x86 10:44:46 - Copying files for device Dell PERC S100 S300 Controller [storport] 10:44:46 - ImagePath is: system32\drivers\bcraid.sys 10:44:46 - INF Filename is: oem2.inf 10:44:46 - Success

No NIC to be found.
Another question first: does booting into the rescue environment from the OS-menu have the same effect as if booted from the CD? So when adding files to the c:\boot\Macrium\Drivers section should be enough; no need to keep burning cd's?
Since I see no change in behaviour despite adding and removing drivers, i'm starting to wonder if I'm on the correct path.
I've also tried WinDriversBackup to determine what driver to use. This util sees the Broadcom driver, but adding it to the boot environment doesn't do anything ( so it seems ).
Then I tried the NETXTREME II MONOLITHIC "RIS" DRIVER. Also without success.
Any clues? |

I just succeeded in starting the rescue environment with all the correct drivers.
I wanted to test if I was using the correct drivers from within the PE environment. For this I copied them to a USB stick which I kept in the system.
During the next boot, PE detected various drivers. Then everything was fine. Network and disks returned.
How can I convince the rescue environment to use its own location for driver files?

Hi
If the drivers are located under '\drivers\' on the rescue CD then they will be loaded from the CD. The exception to this is if you have a USB flash drive connected with a '\drivers\' folder at the time of booting. In this case the drivers from the flash drive will be loaded.
Can you confirm that your rescue CD contains the correct drivers under the '\drivers\' folder?
Kind Regards

Hi Nick,
The \Drivers\ dir exists both on the USB and CD. When I use the CD only, than none of the drivers are loaded.
As soon as I insert the USB device, it loads the drivers. Is there an order issue?
Kind regards, Duco |

Hi,
If this is the case, then your CD drive is likely attached to an unsupported interface. Booting from the CD without the usb drive attached, can you see your CD drive with PE Explorer. If you can just see drive X:, then this is the case and booting with your usb stick attached is your only option.
To make things slightly neater, you could make your usb stick bootable, there are some instructions here. http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50025.aspx

Hi Nick,
YouŽve guessed correct ( or you are clairvoyant ), thereŽs only drive X: when booting without USB stick.
IŽll give the bootable usb stick a spin. Get back to you next week.
Kind regards, Duco |

As it appears, it is not possible to get either USB stick or CD boot running. But it is possible to boot from a CD with the USB stick attached. Fortunately the R210 has 2 internal USB slots, so I simply plugged a stick in with the drivers and some additional software.
Now I can boot from CD and all is well.
Thanks for all the support. Duco |
