Hello,

I've been a happy user of Reflect 4.2.2033 since 2008. I built my rescue CD using Win PE v2.0, and have used it many times with no problems whatsoever. I'm running this on Windows Vista Business, SP1 (32-bit).

This evening I upgraded to version 4.2.3638 and added GPT support via the "Additions" pack. (I'd like to use reflect to back up my client data to a 4 TB raid enclosure.)

I have two related questions:

1) Do I need to upgrade/replace my rescue CD because I've upgraded to the latest build of Reflect, or can I still access previously-created and future images of my system drive with the existing rescue CD?

2) If I begin backing up/imaging my data drive to this new RAID enclosure (4 TB, GPT), is there anything that I need to know to successfully accomplish backups and/or restores?

Thanks in advance for your assistance/advice

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us.

Since you have recently purchased additions then you will need to recreate the rescue CD to include that functionality.

All builds of version 4 will be able to access images created with an earlier build so you should have no issues accessing images created with an earlier build.

The only requirement to successfully backup/restore to/from the external RAID enclosure will be a working NIC driver within the PE environment. Have a public share on the NAS, map it as a network drive and you should be good to go.

Kind regards.

Chris.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick response. I need to clarify a couple of points:

1) I only use the rescue CD to restore my system (C:) disk, which is MBR. In this scenario, I'm not using the "new" functionality, right? Therefore, would the old rescue CD suffice, or will it simply not function correctly when restoring newly- and previously-created images?

2) My new RAID enclosure is not a NAS, but is actually a DAS locally attached via Firewire 800. As long as I have "Additions" installed, is there anything else of which I should be made aware?

The reason I'd like to keep using the old rescue CD is because I've used it many times to successfully restore all of my PCs (Vista Business SP1, Vista Home Premium SP2, XP Home SP2, XP Pro SP2, XP Home SP3). I'm not so sure I'll be as lucky with the next CD I create. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" You know what I mean?

Thanks again for your reply.

I believe a minimal Macrium CD will restore an image to the same hardware,
and the additions are only useful when restoring to different hardware.

Just incase I have got it wrong,
but mostly because I do not trust a CD to live for ever,
I like to ensure I have at least one spare CD to fall back on,
so I am quite happy to make a new one whilst I have a working system that is capable of doing so.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to us.

In order to access the GPT partitions on the Firewire drive, you will need to have the Additions package installed as this is what adds GPT support to Macrium Reflect. This also means that you will need to recreate the rescue CD in order to have GPT support when in PE.

As long as the Firewire drive is connected when PE boots, there should be no other requirements in order to restore from that device.

Kind regards.

Chris.

Hello again,

I figured it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a newer version of the rescue CD available in case I need it, so I decided to create one.

However, when I choose Win PE, it still shows v2.0 as the option - Isn't there a new version of PE that I need, and if so, how to I access it?

Also, I noticed that there is an update to the rescue CD image dated Jan 18, 2011. I read through the history, but saw no reference to GPT support. Does anyone know when GPT support was added to the rescue CD image?

Thanks

To check if you are running the latest version of Windows PE click the 'Updates' button in the CD burn wizard.

GPT support is included with Macrium Reflect additions.

Hi,

In my post dated June 26, 12:54, I indicated that I had checked for updates, but the only item that appeared was an update for the rescue CD image dated Jan 18, 2011. There was no reference to an update to Win PE.

However, I'm pretty certain that Win PE 3.0 exists. The question is whether I need Win PE 3.0 to restore data from a GPT disk when using the rescue CD, or does the Jan 2011 CD image already contain what is needed to perform that task?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi

Macrium Reflect version 4.2 generates Windows PE version 2 not 3.

Version 2 of Windows PE will give GPT support provided you first install Macrium Reflect Additions to Macrium Reflect full paid version and only then burn a new Windows PE rescue CD. Before you burn a new rescue CD always click on Updates at step 6 in tutorial: http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50045.aspx

Hope this helps
