I have backed up my C drive, verified the backup, and apparently successfully restored it using a boot CD. I say "apparently" because although I got a message after the restore saying (can't remember the exact words) "Restore successful" when I try to boot the machine I just get an error saying (again, approximate wording) "MBR missing".
I can try again using the option to install a standard MBR but presumably that is a less good option compared with restoring the one that was already there. Will having just a standard MBR rather than the proper one cause problems later?
I assume that you are restoring to a new disk in which case the MBR would be initially blank. Reflect will backup and restore your MBR and sector 0 exactly as it was at the time of backup.
It may be that your BIOS has virus protection that is preventing update to the MBR. Can you check for any obvious settings in your BIOS?
The only reason that you might have a non-standard MBR is if you have a multi boot PC with a third party boot manager OR a system recovery partition (such as DELL). In any case the standard MBR will boot your PC to its active primary partition.
